I kid you not.
Just a quick note that this is gonna be graphic heavy...
I wanted to do a painting. Pulled out a canvas board, 16" x 20". Good size. Played a bit with some watercolor crayons and spray inks. I let it dry, then I painted a mandala using navy blue acrylic paint.

You can see a close up here:

I was amazed that I was actually able to do this in relative peace. I brought my canvas and paint to the kitchen table, within eyesight of D, and he let me paint. I was interrupted a few times, but overall I got to paint. Each layer was sealed with fixative. I want to tell you this up front, okay?

I really like how the background came out, and I wanted to keep as much of it visible as possible, so I decided to paint the mandala with watercolors for the transparency.

See you can still see the background through the watercolors. Liking it... Sealed with fixative...

Well, it was alright, but I knew what would really make it pop! I pulled out my white acrylic paint and did some detailing!
Did I take pictures? SIGH... nope. Forgot, 'cuz I was in the zone!!!! ; )
When I finally put the paintbrush down, and let it dry, I decided I wanted to put a coat of gloss varnish so everything will really pop!
Sigh...
Okay, normally I would use a spray gloss sealer for this, but I couldn't find it, so I decided to use a liquid one. It's water-based and I did seal everything as I went along!

The above is a shot of the painting on the floor... I'm so ticked that it's gonna stay there til I can deal with it...
Here's a shot where the painting doesn't look so bad:

Ah, but it is bad...

Okay, I picked it up again, so I can take these pictures, but I threw it back on the floor, where it's staying!

See all the lovely detailing I did?!? Ruined... Streaks and clumps... I didn't even know I was ruining the painting until I noticed clumps forming on the mandala about half through...

I'm sitting here, heaving huge sighs right now... sigh.

Did you notice that the background is fine? It's just the watercolors and some of the white detailing...

Last shot of the center.
Wow... I had so much fun doing this... I think, when it's dry, I'm gonna slather gesso all over it and do a new one. No watercolors this time!
Ugh... lol
I think I will add this to:

i maybe need to come back and see this again later- because in looking at it now, i really Don't think it's bad.
ReplyDeletei Like it.
Like. i totally just scrolled back up to see what i was supposed to be hating. I see the clumps, but i really like texture in a painting.
I'll just shut up because i know what it's like to be pissed about something i made. I just want to hate on it.
You can hate on your painting.
I like it.
neener neener neener.

amy
OK so suck it up and take some sandpaper to it and distress it and make it cooler than it is now!
ReplyDeletePS: I like it!
ReplyDeleteWell, we learn from our mistakes. :) It looks good to me though. Hope you get to save it. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you are so disappointed. it sucks when that happens :(
ReplyDeleteI've got to be honest though - I really love how this looks! REALLY love it! it's the kind of really cool effect that would be hard to get if you were actually trying for it
